Varenyky and Vodka at Mriya Bistro

If you’re wandering Earl’s Court or exploring Kensington and craving something truly different, Mriya Neo Bistro is one of the most exciting contemporary Ukrainian restaurants in London right now. Part cultural embassy, part modern bistro, Mriya blends tradition and innovation in every dish. It’s a place where Ukrainian heritage is celebrated through bold flavours, thoughtful plating, and warm hospitality from Ukraine.
Varenyky | Вареники
Mriya’s potato varenyky aren’t served the way you’d expect back home. We ordered the potato varenyky, asking for them without bacon but with fried onions. While fried onions weren’t available, the kitchen offered a side of sheep’s cheese instead.
The varenyky arrived on a layer of chicken stock gravy, which added warmth and depth. It’s definitely not traditional, but it works. The stock brings savoury richness while the cheese gives a tangy contrast. It’s always interesting to see how Ukrainian staples are reimagined abroad, especially for London’s diverse audience.
Personally, I’ll always favour the classic onion-and-sour-cream pairing, you just can’t beat it, but it was great to see Ukrainian comfort food reimagined in a fresh way. And for those discovering varenyky for the first time, this style could be a fun introduction. I personally enjoyed the gravy, but the sheep’s cheese wasn’t quite for me. Sometimes tradition really is the winner.
Dirty Martinis | Брудний мартіні
We decided to go for vodka martinis, and they were genuinely good – cold, balanced, and smooth. A good martini is harder to find than people think, and these were excellent. If you enjoy vodka in your cocktails, these hit the mark and paired nicely with the food from the menu. A nice touch that felt both Ukrainian and London at the same time.
Honey Cake | Медівник
For dessert we tried the honey cake. It was nicely sweet and satisfying, though on the denser side. It wasn’t the lightest we’ve had, but it paired well with our drinks and rounded off the meal comfortably.
