Ukraine’s Flag: United by Colours
Everyone knows the colours of the Ukrainian flag: azure blue and vibrant yellow. But did you know that these colours are a minimalist representation of Ukraine’s landscape?
Symbolism
Значення
The flag consists of two bright stripes: blue and yellow. The most generally accepted explanation is that the blue symbolises the sky, the yellow the abundant wheat fields below.
History
Історія
During the Soviet-era, the hanging of the blue and yellow flag was considered a crime. However, at the end of the 19th century, a large exodus of Ukrainians abroad meant that the blue and yellow colours flourished amongst the diaspora.
Did you know that the Ukrainian flag has also made an appearance in space? On November 19, 1997 the flag was unfurled by the Ukrainian Cosmonaut Leonid Kadenyuk!
National Day of the Flag
День Державного прапора України
Ukraine celebrates the National Day of the Flag, День Державного прапора України, on August 23 each year. This tradition started in 2004 after a 2003 decree was passed by the then-president Leonid Kuchma.
The Meaning Today
Значення прапора сьогодні
Today, the Ukrainian flag holds a much greater meaning – not only does it symbolise our beautiful land, but it represents the colours of bravery and freedom.
After the full-scale invasion of Ukraine was launched on February 24, 2022, our colours of blue and yellow became instantly recognisable. Several landmarks around the world are often adorned in the striking blue and yellow, in a show of solidarity with our bravery. Our colours are synonymous with freedom, and something to be proud of.
