Ukraine Day: A Taste of Home at Huddersfield University
On November 22, 2023, Little Ukrainian Blog teamed up with the University of Huddersfield’s Ukrainian Society united to bring an unforgettable “Ukraine Day” at the Students Union. Discover how Ukraine Day stole the spotlight at the Students Union, from the classic dishes of сало and вареники, to the traditional music accompanying Ukrainian dance lessons.

No “Ukraine Day” is complete without a traditional food stand! Our team prepared and brought a selection of Ukrainian sweets, сало (salo – pork backfat), житній хліб (rye bread), and the star of the table was, of course, вареники (varenyky). These homemade dumplings stole the spotlight with two fillings to choose from: cabbage and mushroom, and the classic favourite, potato.

Dance, Language, and Games

In addition to the food stall, students embraced the chance to step into the world of traditional Ukrainian festivities. From trying out classic Ukrainian dance moves to mastering basic language phrases and engaging in popular Ukrainian games, the event was a lively crash course in Ukrainian culture.
Adding to the vibrant mix, other cultural societies, including the Kashmiri society, enthusiastically joined the celebration. Embracing the spirit of cross-cultural collaboration, members donned traditional Ukrainian attire, the Vyshyvanka, and took a spin on the dance floor.
A note from the president
“Our Ukraine Day definitely warmed my heart, for lots of reasons. Firstly, the team. I didn’t expect to meet people, who would be as loyal and determined to present our country as much as l am. The efforts that were made should be never taken for granted 🥹
Secondly, everything around us was about Ukraine: Flags, posters, food, songs, clothes, and even blue and yellow lights! That made me feel back home for a little while and l genuinely hope that all the students who came managed to receive insight into Ukrainian culture which will make them come for more events.
