Australia is set to join the global celebration of Ukrainian Independence Day 2024 with a series of vibrant events that highlight the rich culture and heritage of Ukraine. From Sydney to Melbourne, Ukrainian communities and their supporters across Australia will come together to honour Ukraine’s journey to freedom. According to the 2011 census, there are roughly 38,000 Ukrainians in Australia, which includes those of Ukrainian descent.

- Ashfield: The Polish Club Ashfield – “Ukrainian Independence Day Fundraising Dinner.” Starting from 6:30pm, the dinner includes special guest speaker Dr. Nataliia Drobushar and all proceeds go to humanitarian endeavours in Odesa. RSVP by 17 August.
- Brisbane: Ukrainian Community of Queensland – “Ukrainian Festival Brisbane.” Taking place from 11am at the Ukrainian Community Centre on Galsworthy Street. There will be Ukrainian food, folk dancing, cultural stalls, live music, beer and horilka, and activities for children.
- Geelong: Ukrainians in Geelong – “Ukrainian Independence Day.” From 12 noon onwards, there is a flag raising ceremony, and the option of a 3-course traditional lunch. Booking is required.
- Perth: Perth Film Society – “Film Night for Ukrainian Independence Day.” Starting at 7:30pm, the film society will be screening Ukrainian films in the Joan Knight Studio, Perth Theatre.
- Sydney: Ukrainians in Sydney – “Stand with Ukraine.” From 4pm to 6pm, there will be a musical performance by Khrystyna Soloviy alongside a keynote speaker: Ruslana Danilkina, who is an inspiring 21-year-old Ukrainian defender, veteran and amputee from the Superhumans Centre in Ukraine.
- Tasmania: Association of Ukrainians in Tasmania – “Ukraine’s Independence Day Dinner.” Saturday 24th August, 4pm – 7pm at the Ukrainian Hall on Mainroad. The menu includes varenyky with various fillings, salads, a BBQ, and sweet nalysnyky. Registration is essential.
- Victoria: Association of Ukrainians in Victoria – “Rally: Defend Democracy, Stand with Ukraine.” At Federation Square from 2pm – 4pm.

- Adelaide: Association of Ukrainians in South Australia – “Ukrainian Independence Day Concert.” Concert begins at 3:30pm and doors open at 3pm. Tickets cost $20 but are free for displaced Ukrainians and children under 16.
- Victoria: Association of Ukrainians in Victoria – “Ukrainian Independence Day Market.” The market will include craft workshops for all ages, Ukrainian food and craft stalls, activities, and live music. This is taking place at the Ukrainian Hall in Essendon, from 10am – 5pm.

Canada is hosting several celebrations for Ukrainian Independence Day 2024, reflecting the strong ties between Canada and Ukraine.

- Calgary: Ukrainian Day in the Park. At Ukrainian Pioneers Park from 4pm, and entry is free.
- Ontario: Ukrainian Museum of Canada, Ontario Branch – “Ukrainian Independence Day.”
- Lévis: Independence Day of Ukraine. From 5pm onwards.
- Kelowna, BC: “Independence Day Festival.” From 6:30pm you can enjoy food, vendors, wine tasting and a free film screening.
- Québec City: Independence Day of Ukraine Picnic. From 12pm onwards at the Plains of Abraham.
- Saskatoon, SK: Ukrainian Day in the Park 2024, from 12pm – 5pm.
- Toronto: St Volodymyr Institute and Ukrainian Canadian Congress – “Ukrainian Independence Day Celebration.” From 10am there will be an outdoor stage show, food fair, market place, children’s centre, and beer garden. Taking place at Centennial Park.
- Vancouver: Independence Day Picnic at Sunset Beach Vancouver, from 2pm.
- Vernon: “Ukrainian Independence Day BBQ.” From 4pm at Kin Beach Park
- Victoria: Ukrainian Canadian Congress, Victoria Branch – “Ukrainian Independence Day Picnic” from 1pm – 6pm at Beckwith Park.
- Winnipeg: Ukrainian Canadian Congress Manitoba – “Ukrainian Independence Day.” From 4pm – 10pm, a family event with free admissions. You can enjoy activities, Ukrainian food, Ukrainian vendors, and entertainment such as fireworks and live music.

Germany is gearing up to celebrate Ukrainian Independence Day 2024 with a series of events ranging from those showcasing Ukraine’s vibrant culture and history, to peaceful rallies and demonstrations.

- Berlin: Vitsche Berlin – “Independence Day.” From 4pm to 9pm, Vitsche have organised a five-hour demonstration where you can take part in creating a camouflage net with accompanying Ukrainian music and speeches. The net will be made for Ukrainian volunteers working in frontline areas.
- Düsseldorf: Blue and Yellow Cross (Blau-Gelbes Kreuz e.V. Düsseldorf) – “Ukrainian Independence Day 2024 (Unabhängigkeitstag der Ukraine).” A rally and procession through Düsseldorf starting at 12pm at Schadowplatz.
- Hamburg: Feine Ukraine – Verein der deutsch-ukrainischen Zusammenarbeit – “Ukrainian Independence Day.” From 6pm to 9pm at Jungfernstieg in Hamburg, there is a parade/rally followed by a concert.
- Heilbronn: Ukrainians in Heilbronn (Ukrainer in Heilbronn e.V.) – “Ukrainian Independence Day (der Tag der ukrainischen Unabhängigkeit).” From 2:30pm at Wertwissen Park to celebrate Independence Day.
- München: München Hilft Ukraine e.V. – “Ukrainian Independence Day (Feier zum Tag der Unabhängigkeit der Ukraine).” A rally to commemorate Ukrainian Independence Day, taking place from 5pm at Karlsplatz.
- Trier: German-Ukrainian Cultural bridge (Deutsch-Ukrainische Kulturbrücke e.V.) – “Ukrainian Independence Day.” From 2pm there will be a meeting at Viehmarktplatz, followed by ceremonial speeches and a programme of music.

Poland is preparing to celebrate Ukrainian Independence Day 2024 with heartfelt events that honour the strong bond between the two nations and recognise Poland’s role in supporting Ukrainian refugees. With Poland having welcomed a significant number of Ukrainians seeking refuge, cities like Warsaw, Kraków, and Kozalin will host events that highlight the cultural richness of Ukraine and celebrate its enduring spirit of independence.

- Kielce: INTEURO Centre for the Integration of Foreigners – “Ukrainian Independence Day.” This programme starts at 9am, and the leading theme of this year’s meeting will be the support of entrepreneurship for foreigners in Poland.
- Kozalin: “Majsternia” Association (Stowarzyszenie „Majsternia”) – “Charity Concert (Koncert charytatywny).” The concert starts at 5pm and features a range of both Ukrainian and Polish artists.
- Kraków: Rally organised by Chimera Kultur, KOD Małopolskie, SUN for Ukraine, and the Ukrainian Consulate in Kraków. Starting at 3:00pm at Rynek Główny under Wieżą Ratuszową Tower in Kraków.
- Lublin: There are several events planned in Lublin from Friday 23rd to Sunday 25th, including an exhibition “The Crimes of Russia” on the Friday. There is a full day planned for Saturday 24th, including an integration festival, marches, and Petrykivka painting. You can view the full list here.
- Poznań: “Concert for Ukrainian Independence Day.” With free admission, this concert is taking place at Castle Square.
- Warsaw: Polish-Ukrainian Chamber of Commerce and “Stand with Ukraine” Foundation – “Ukrainian Independence Day 2024”. Starting at 6:30pm at Castle Square (Plac Zamkowy) in Warsaw.

- Aberdeen: Ukrainian Hub Aberdeen – “Ukrainian Independence Day.” From 2pm – 4pm, further details are on their website.
- Ashton: Ashton Ukrainian Centre – “Independence Day.” From 2pm you can enjoy entertainment for all ages as well as Ukrainian food.
- Bradford: Bradford Ukrainian Club – “Independence Day.” Taking place from 12pm – 5pm at the Ukrainian Community Centre (BD7 2EA), this free-entry event includes a BBQ, family fun activities and an opportunity to try Ukrainian handicraft.
- Derby: Derby Ukrainian Club: “Independence Day BBQ and Rally.” From 3pm, a rally and march to Derby’s Ukrainian Club where you can enjoy an Independence Day BBQ, including live folk music and Ukrainian beer.
- Doncaster: Doncaster Ukrainian Centre – “Independence Day of Ukraine.” A Ukrainian celebration including traditional food, a raffle and photography exhibition. Doors open at the Ukrainian Centre (DN2 4AD) at 3pm.
- Glasgow: Community of Ukrainians in Glasgow – “Celebrating Ukrainian Independence Day.” A family day in the park from 12pm – 6pm at Victoria Park. The day includes speeches, master classes in Ukrainian art, sport activities, and other activities such as aqua-painting.
- Gloucester: Gloucester Ukrainian Club – “Independence Day”. A celebratory event at the club from 2pm with light refreshments afterwards.
- Halifax: Halifax Ukrainian Community – “Independence Day”. Wreath Laying at the Halifax Cenotaph at 2pm followed by drinks at the Ring o Bells.
- Ilkley: “Celebrate Ukrainian Independence Day” at the Clark Foley Community Centre from 10am – 2pm, with a day of arts and crafts. You can make dolls, experience petrykivka painting, and enjoy traditional Ukrainian dancing and singing.
- Leicester: Leicester Ukrainian Club ‘Kalyna’ – “Ukrainian Independence Day Celebration.” A social gathering with music and dance performances.
- Liverpool: Association of Ukrainians in Liverpool – “Ukraine Independence Day.” From 3pm – 6pm at Sefton Park there will be workshops including making motanka dolls, vyshyvankas and paper modelling, a fair with embroidery and accessories, and traditional Ukrainian singing and folk dancing.
- Lockerbie: Hallmuir Ukrainian POW Chapel – “Ukrainian Independence Day.” A ceremonial planting of a cherry tree at the edge of the orchard to mark solidarity with Ukraine.
- Manchester: Ukrainian Cultural Centre Manchester – “Independence Day Family Celebration / Сімейне свято до Дня Незалежності.” From 12pm to 5pm you can enjoy master classes, Ukrainian food, trampolines and a fair.
- Manchester: Ukrainian Cultural Centre Manchester – “Slava Ukraini Ukrainian Independence Day Concert / Концерт до Дня Незалежності.” An evening to celebrate Ukrainian Independence, which kicks off at 5pm with a performance from the group Karaoke zi Lvova. The concert begins at 7pm.
- Nottingham: Nottingham Ukrainian Cultural Centre – “Ukrainian Independence Day.” A BBQ, live music, Ukrainian crafts, cake stalls and more. From 1pm – 7pm at the Centre (NG5 2DP).
- Perth: Ukrainian Independence Day Celebration Event. This event will take place from midday to 4pm at the Civic Hall. There will be a parade and amazing Ukrainian singers at the North Inch Stage.
- Rochdale: Rochdale Ukrainian Centre – “Ukrainian Independence Day.” A whole day of activities, starting at 10am with the raising of the flag. At 12pm, varenyky will be served which is followed by a concert and other activities at the centre (OL11 1HJ).
- Stockport: Stockport Ukrainian Club – “Ukrainian Independence Day Summer Festival.” From 2pm – 7pm, you can enjoy live Ukrainian music, a BBQ, bouncy castle and games. Entry fee is £3 and the event is at the Ukrainian Club (SK2 7AA).
- Waltham Cross: Waltham Cross Ukrainian Club – “Ukrainian Independence Day.” A free commemorative event starting at 4pm, with live music and a BBQ.
- Wolverhampton: Wolverhampton Ukrainian Community Centre – “Ukrainian Independence Day.” Join the community in Wolverhampton from midday until 6pm for live music, buffet and games. Entry costs £3, but is free for under 16s.
Sunday 25th August, 2024
- Leeds: Leeds Ukrainian Community Association – “Ukrainian Independence Day.” Music entertainment, traditional Ukrainian food, and Ukrainian souvenir stalls. Tickets cost £3, which includes food, and all proceeds go towards their charitable projects in Ukraine.

- Boston: Ukrainian Cultural Centre of New England – “Independence Day of Ukraine in Boston.” From 12pm to 4pm you can enjoy the raising of the flag, local Ukrainian vendors and businesses, local non-profits helping Ukraine, lively music and traditional dance.
- Hawaii: Hawaii Stands with Ukraine – “Ukraine Independence Day Event 2024.” From 10am – 4pm at Kapiolani Regional Park.
- New York: Vyshyvanka Run NYC 2024. A friendly 5k run for adults and children, where you wear your vyshyvanka!
- North Carolina: Ukrainian Congress Committee of America in Charlotte – “Ukrainian Independence Day.” The afternoon will include Ukrainian food to purchase, music performances, and activities. There will be fundraising for medical equipment to Ukraine.
- Ohio: “Cincinnati Ukrainian Festival” organised by Cincinnati Ukrainian Festival and Cincy4Ukraine. The third annual festival will include performances, unique crafts, activities and Ukrainian food. The festival will be held at the Fleming Road United Church of Christ, OH 45231.
- Ohio: “Ukrainian Village Parade and Festival” is the annual Ukrainian Independence Day parade in Parma’s Ukrainian Village. The procession begins at 11am.
- Ohio: St Josaphat Cathedral Parish – “St Josaphat Ukrainian Festival.” 12pm – 11pm on the Saturday, and 12pm – 9pm on Sunday 25th, at 5720 State Road, Parma OH, 44134. There will be Ukrainian and ethnic food, live bands, bouncy castles and more.
- Virginia: Ukrainian Community of Virginia – “Celebration of the Independence Day of Ukraine.” From 4:30pm until 7:30pm at Cheswick Park.
