What is Ivan Kupala?

Celebrated around the summer solstice, Ivan Kupala blends ancient Slavic beliefs with later Christian traditions. Today it remains one of Ukraine’s most beloved folk celebrations.

#ivankupala #ivanakupala #іванакупала🔥

Many believed that nature was at its most powerful on Ivan Kupala Night, and that its rituals could bring luck, protection and prosperity 🌅

One of the oldest symbols of Ivan Kupala was Marena, an effigy linked to nature, life, death and renewal.

🌸🕯️ One of Ivan Kupala’s most beautiful traditions was releasing candlelit flower crowns onto rivers and lakes.

The journey of the vinok was believed to reveal clues about love, luck and the future, turning a simple wreath into a symbol of hope, romance and possibility.

The traditional Kupala bonfire represents the power of the sun. According to folklore, its flames could cleanse people of bad fortune and negative energy 🔥

Couples would leap over the flames hand-in-hand. If they landed together without letting go, it was said their love would endure 🧡

Legend says a magical fern flower blooms for a single night each year. Whoever finds it is granted wisdom, fortune and extraordinary gifts 🌱
